My Nursing Confidence Has Immensely Boosted - Winrose

July 18, 2019

Each month, our International Employee Supervisor Team selects one or two spectacular A-players on assignment to showcase their journey. We asked our healthcare professional to share his or her story of perseverance, adjustment and professional growth.Winrose is from Kenya and is currently working at a client facility in New Mexico. She has been working in her field for 25 years and with PassportUSA for over 2 years. Why did you decide to become a registered nurse? "In the early 1980s, I admired nurses in their white uniform and cap. Their confidence and the way they walked, to me, made nurses the best and honorable professionals. I didn't know any nurses personally at that time until one of my friends joined a nursing program. Just after one semester she looked so different in her attitude, behavior and physical appearance. She behaved mature and attracted a lot of respect from neighbors. After 2 years of training, her life changed, even financially. This inspired me and I knew I wanted to be one after I finished high school."

"Wow! My family and I have been exposed to a better life we would have never experienced back home."

Before coming to the US, where did you practice your profession?"I have practiced nursing in several units with years' worth of breaks from clinical work. I started in med-surg, emergency department, outpatient clinic, and ground ambulance, before I joined insurance medical case management and claims assessment. I really desired to come to the USA and in preparation for the process I had to go back to clinical nursing in a small hospital where I worked in the emergency unit that handled both ambulatory and emergency cases."Why did you want to come to the US? "Many of my nursing school classmates went to the USA immediately and I admired them when they came home for vacation. They talked of "real nursing practice" with a lot of sophisticated equipment. Financially they acquired a lot of property. Thus, I decided to come to the US."How did you first hear of PassportUSA? "In 2015 I started my search for a healthcare staffing company online. That's how I found PassportUSA. I decided to apply at night and by the next morning I received feedback from PassportUSA and the rest is history."How is your experience working with your PassportUSA International Employee Supervisor so far? "Deirdre has been like a close family member to me. Her support, encouragement, and genuine care for my family has made me feel at home with the PassportUSA family. I feel valued and not just an employee in the field."Would you recommend PassportUSA to other people and why?"It is definitely a yes! Coming from a foreign country where nursing care and experiences are so different, one needs a lot of support to understand US healthcare and get into the system without feeling out of place. PassportUSA understands this and they do exactly that. All of the staff I worked with in my process pretty much held my hand with every step."Please rate how likely you are to recommend PassportUSA to other healthcare professionals. "I rate PassportUSA a 10/10, I am extremely likely to recommend PassportUSA to other healthcare professionals."How does working in the US differ from your healthcare career abroad? "The medical conditions we encounter daily here are so different from my country. Malaria and respiratory infections and road traffic accidents are the most common in my country. Cardiovascular disease management is thorough here in the USA. I have encountered new drugs and have gained confidence learning about them. Here in the US I feel like I am taking care of a person, not a condition."How have you grown professionally? "My confidence has immensely boosted. I have learned to use equipment and technology in my care I had never used before and only read in books. My program which I have just completed has left me more assertive and able to appropriately give holistic, culturally-sensitive care."How has your life and your family's life changed for the better? "Wow! My family and I have been exposed to a better life we would have never experienced back home. We have been privileged financially to travel to places we could only imagine back home, when family vacations were considered a luxury. Our family members back home can tell how much our lives have changed too."
