Providing a Better Future For My Family - Annabel

November 8, 2019

Each month, our International Employee Supervisor Team selects one or two spectacular A-players on assignment to showcase their journey. We asked our healthcare professional to share his or her story of perseverance, adjustment and professional growth.Annabel is from the Philippines and is currently working at a client facility in Florida. She has been working in her field for 13 years and with PassportUSA for over 2 years. Why did you decide to become a registered nurse? "I decided to pursue my nursing profession because I was inspired by a cousin who has been a nurse ever since I was a child. I saw her compassion not just to her patients but to our family members also, who were sick and had medical issues. She has always been dedicated to her job. Another reason why I decided to become a RN is because I see my parents growing old with medical problems and I want to be able to serve them to aid in the improvement of their well-being and of others as well."

"Here in the US, I am able to learn more, be exposed to more advanced procedures, improve my skills, and get very good training."

Before coming to the US, where did you practice your profession?"Prior to my US nursing practice, I worked at a hospital in the Philippines. I was a medical-surgical nurse for a year and then assigned as PACU nurse for three years. Then I became a NICU nurse for almost six years before I came to the USA."Why did you want to come to the US? "I wanted to come to the US because it has been my childhood dream of being able to work and live here in the US. I am able to learn more, be exposed to more advanced procedures, improve my skills, and get very good training. I like to better my career opportunities so I can earn more and be able to provide a better future to my kids."How did you first hear of PassportUSA?"PassportUSA/Health Carousel was mentioned to me many times by a good friend of mine. My friend recommended Health Carousel Philippines and that's when my journey with PassportUSA/Health Carousel began."How is your experience working with your PassportUSA International Employee Supervisor so far? "My IES, Deirdre, has always been so helpful and very encouraging. I salute her for being so supportive ever since I started my US nursing profession. She made sure that my family and I have settled comfortably upon our arrival, took care of our transportation and housing, guided me religiously in compliance of requirements, reminded me of exams I need to complete and consistently checks in about me and my family. Overall, she is doing an excellent job."Would you recommend PassportUSA to other people and why?"I definitely and highly recommend PassportUSA to other people, especially to those who want to pursue their career here in the USA because the staff is really great and efficient and they truly care for their candidates."Please rate how likely you are to recommend PassportUSA to other healthcare professionals. "I rate PassportUSA a 10/10, I am extremely likely to recommend PassportUSA to other healthcare professionals."How does working in the US differ from your healthcare career abroad? "Working here in the US as a RN is entirely different. First and foremost, in my previous job, documentation/charting was handwritten compared to working here where everything is typed on the computer. I have also learned skills or procedures here which are done differently in my last job. There are also medications here that I never encountered in the Philippines. There are a lot more differences, but I am glad that I learned them here and I know I still have a lot to learn."How have you grown professionally? "I have grown professionally because of my exposure to my first US hospital. I learned so much and I am able to do some procedures which I have never done before or may have done differently in my last job. I gained more confidence while working with difficult people and families and dealing with foreign patients. With this professional growth, I will always be grateful to my first U.S. hospital and of course to PassportUSA."How has your life and your family's life changed for the better? "We have a stronger family bond and we have gotten to know each other better since it is always the four of us (me, my husband and two sons). I am glad PassportUSA made sure that we all deployed to the US at the same time. Since I am earning much more than I used to, we now have more chances to travel together to different states and visit amusement parks like Universal Studios and Magic Kingdom."
