Making Friends In the US

You'll have a lot going on when you first get to the United States such as settling into your new home, starting your new career, and learning how to adapt to life in the U.S. In the midst of all of this activity building new friendships may not seem like a high priority, but it is crucial to help overcome perfectly normal feelings like homesickness you will surely encounter from time to time.Here are some great tips for building friendships in the USA; surprisingly without adding any more to do's or stress to your already full schedule.

  • Start with getting to know your co-workers. Talk to them about their hobbies and interests, and listen to their replies. Chances are you will have things in common with them and they will be interested in your background as well.
  • Accept people's invitations to lunch or to hang out (socialize) after work. Even if you're a bit tired, try go for at least go for a little bit. If you don't have time to attend, politely decline their invitation and try and reschedule, or let them know you would love to go the next time they invite you. Remember, if you say no too many times in a row, they may stop asking.
  • If you have children, it may be easiest to invite new friends and their children to a meal at your home. It's a nice way to get to know them.
  • Don't forget your health and hobbies. You need to pursue these activities to stay healthy and happy and its a great way to meet new people with common interests.

The most important thing to remember when making friends in the United States is to just be yourself.
