With a great sense of sadness, on behalf of the PassportUSA team and Health Carousel, we announce to you that one of our founding partners Todd Bol passed away on October 18th due to complications associated with his battle against pancreatic cancer.

Over the past ten years, Todd built the Little Free Library which started with one “take a book, leave a book” station designed as a tribute to his deceased mother who was a schoolteacher. The Little Free Library has gown to a staggering 75,000+ libraries in 88 different countries.

As tremendous as his accomplishments are with the Little Free Library, he must also be recognized for his impressive role in what has become the PassportUSA program today.

Sixteen years ago, Todd, realizing there was a shortage of nursing educators in the USA and abroad, partnered with Sister Remy Angela Junio, President of St. Paul University Philippines and Chancellor of St. Paul University System, to create a program that would allow Philippines nurses to earn their Master’s from a U.S. nursing school and gain experience within the U.S. healthcare system. This program became known as the Global Scholarship Alliance (GSA). GSA produced more than 200 graduates, many of whom have gone on to nursing leadership and education roles in the USA and abroad.

Today, nurses that were a part of the original GSA program are serving as nursing leaders, educators, and experienced bedside nurses in the USA and abroad.

While we cannot overlook Todd’s role in fostering community and literacy through the Little Free Library, we must also acknowledge the countless lives of nurses and patients he helped improve through his vision and hard work in the formative years of GSA, PassportUSA, and Health Carousel.

The leadership team of Health Carousel was fortunate enough to visit with Todd before he passed and presented him with a framed photo (below) showing hundreds of faces of nurses that have been a part of the GSA and PassportUSA programs he helped create. The caption of the picture reads, “1,000 DREAMS: Presented to Todd Bol whose vision has improved the lives of thousands of healthcare professionals and millions of patients. Thank you for your leadership and friendship – The Health Carousel Family.”

We encourage comments from all who are currently or have previously been associated with the Global Scholarship Alliance program, PassportUSA, or Health Carousel.
