A new report, released by American Association of Directors of Nursing Services (AADNS), details the struggles that Directors of Nursing Services (DONs) face on a daily basis, and how these struggles lead to high burnout and dissatisfaction with their jobs.

According to the report, 75% of DONs identified staff shortages as their #1 concern, while over 60% stated that a lack of adequate staff prevented them from providing proper care for patients. These problems often require DONs to visit the floor themselves to directly care for patients (66% report this happens “routinely”).

39 percent of DONs say they’re unhappy with their work/life balance and are experiencing burnout.

With these findings, it shouldn’t be a surprise that DONs are reporting extremely low levels of job satisfaction. Amy Stewart, AAPACN vice president of curriculum development, states: “It’s not surprising with DONs having to juggle so many competing priorities that 39% say they’re unhappy with their work/life balance and are experiencing real burnout.”

60 percent of DONs stated that a lack of adequate staff prevented them from providing proper care for patients.

Other key findings from the report include that low staffing levels are not the only problem for DONs: finding capable and proficient nurses is becoming more difficult. The ongoing education and training of these professionals consumes valuable time for DONs. This makes short-staffed facilities problems’ more complex.

PassportUSA exists to alleviate both these two problems. By supplying BSN-prepared nurses to facilities at lower costs than travelers, and on a temp-to-perm contract, PassportUSA effectively stops both problems in their tracks. Our highly-qualified nurses are quick to acclimate and 86% continue on at their assigned facility at the conclusion of the contract period, making them both a quick fix to budget problems and long-term shortages, and effectively increasing DON job satisfaction.
