Every year, International Day of Peace is celebrated around the globe on the 21st of September. The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly. In 2001, the UN General Assembly voted to designate the day as a period of non-violence and ceasefire.

Unofficially, the day is known as World Peace Day. And we thought we’d share some great quotes that really help capture the meaning of World Peace Day.

Famous thoughts on peace:

When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace. Jimi Hendrix

Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding. Albert Einstein

Better than a thousand hollow words, is one word that brings peace. Buddha

Peace is a journey of a thousand miles and it must be taken one step at a time. Lyndon B. Johnson

If you want peace, you don’t talk to your friends. You talk to your enemies. Desmond Tutu

Peace and justice are two sides of the same coin. Dwight D. Eisenhower

Those who are at war with others are not at peace with themselves. William Hazlitt

If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there’d be peace. John Lennon

The pursuit of peace and progress cannot end in a few years in either victory or defeat. The pursuit of peace and progress, with its trials and its errors, its successes and its setbacks, can never be relaxed and never abandoned. Dag Hammarskjold

Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal. Martin Luther King, Jr.

We can’t change the world overnight, but we can take a few steps forward every single day. Happy International Day of Peace!
